Begining: London Immigration Story

This is my first batch of photos from a photo story I am starting on immigrants in London. I decided that I wanted to focus on the large Caribbean population here, and more specifically the group of Jamaicans that live in London.

Having grown up on a block with a Trinidadian family who I became very close with, I have always been drawn to Caribbean culture. From chipping and wining down Georgia Ave. in Washington DC as part of the DC Carnival, to learning how to dance to Soca in my neighbors front lawn on hot summer evenings. Caribbean culture has always been something I have viewed as warm, inclusive, fun, and unifying.

Today I made my way over to Brixton Market, an area of London that had previously been foreign to me. I knew it was a large outdoor marketplace, but it wasn't as bustling as I expected being a Tuesday and all. There, I met a number of incredibly kind people who were more than happy to talk with me about coming to London, and living here thus far. I also had some of the best jerk chicken and lamb curry that I have ever had..so I would definitely consider the day's adventure to be a success.

Here are some of the photos I made today.
